When we look back and realize we’ve been doing this for FIVE years, our minds explode! The St-Ambroise Montreal FRINGE Festival, is very close to our hearts at Edge of the City. And ever since we started the FRINGE Fandango, it has always been something we look forward too, and this year is no different!

This week’s Edge of the City features two newcomers to the show! Cassandra Rose from the Quebec Drama Federation joins us to talk about the upcoming QDF Calendar launch hosted by the always handsome, Matt Goldberg, and our Aussie import Shane Adamczak!

The St-Ambroise Montreal FRINGE Festival has kicked off it’s 23rd year! We’re excited to welcome back Amy Blackmore, Director of the Festival, and General Manager Alain Lafrance (it could possibly be Al Lafrance, but you’ll have to listen to find out).

Musical guest Tim Smith, from The 444s, joins us for the very first time, performing new songs from their debut album, and sharing the stories leading to his latest project.

Three musical guests. The separate dates. Three new albums. And Keith Waterfield.

Bobby Dove made her radio debut with us at Edge of the City just about a year ago. And now she’s back promoting her debut album. Dovetales launches this coming Thursday May 30th, 2013, at Quai des Brumes in Montreal.

Emily Skahan is also releasing her debut solo album, Mean Things I’ve Said About Other People, on Friday May 31st, 2013, online at http://emilyskahan.bandcamp.com/. It was produced and recorded by Al Lafrance, from Bloody Underrated.

Now that they’ve established the new genre of Whiskey Billy, The Steady Swagger are releasing the self titled album, which happens to be their second in just two years. They are launching it at Petit Campus this coming Saturday June 1st, 2013.

And last but not in the least bit, least. Keith Waterfield is giving Life Lessons, also on Saturday June 1st, 2013 at Theatre Ste. Catherine. We get a chance to hear about the new show, which is being co-hosted by Aural Turpitude.

They have been together since the beginning of time (which is this case means College), and while many have tried, only a few have gotten them together for an interview… (It might help that two of three host on Edge of the City are part of them…) They are funny, full of wit, charm, and sound effect, we welcome Uncalled For (with some people that are missing…)! They are performing at this years Montreal Sketch Comedy Festival, and it will be awesome!

Also this week, we welcome Jon Cohen, the founder of the One Man Band Festival, which is gearing up for it’s second year. He brought along the brilliant Xania, who will also be releasing her latest album at the festival on Saturday March 25th at Le Cagibi, here in Montreal.

After the resounding success of the Veronica Mars Kickstarter campaign (raising three times the requested amount of $2,000,000), filmmaker and actor Zach Braff has jumped on the band wagon, and created his own campaign to make his new film, Wish I Was Here. His reasoning, without this campaign and the support of this fans (and financial backers), he wouldn’t be able to make the film in the way he would want. But will this change the way “Hollywood” films are made? We debate this with guest Dave Cool (host and producer of On Repeat).

This week’s podcast features music from our friends The Unsettlers. They just played their last show in Montreal for a while, and they will be missed!

Every once and a while we open the doors and book three musicians back to back, and this week we did just that! Our good friend Risa Dickens came by to talk about her new evolving art project “Pass on”, an interdisciplinary work-in-progress combining embroidery and fabric arts, illustration on blank wooden nesting dolls, a pattern of QR codes, and live performance. It’s part of the Data : Salon 4 project at Eastern Bloc (here in Montreal) which is being guest curated by James Finnerty.

Saxsyndrum is playing a show this coming Saturday at Casa Del Popolo with Holobody. We had the chance to talk to Nick Schofield about their upcoming album, and the changes you’ll be hearing. We also have the exclusive premiere of their newest track!

And finally we welcome Krya Shaughnessy, who just released her newest album Waiting for Light just last night in Montreal. Definitely worth buying folks, and she’ll be taking the album on the road!

The Bawdy Electric is easily one of our favourite bands we’ve had on Edge of the City, they played at the No More Radio launch show, and have just released two singles for FREE! You can of course donate, and we encourage you to do so. Chris Durning popped by and talked about the two songs, and so much more!

Tristan D. Lalla was back guest hosting with us, and brought us into the friend zone, but first we talked theatre, and the Veronica Mars Kickstarter campaign to make the long awaited film.

On January 14, 2013 we said goodbye to our good friend, co-producer and co-host Al Lafrance. Now, while all of you presume he’s dead, Al is very much alive working his ass off as the new General Manager of the St-Ambroise Montreal FRINGE Festival. This podcast features a barrage of guests, all of which were big surprises for Al.

One small note, Dan Bingham and Sasha Manoli were talking about the show A Stand Up Guide to Montreal. That show is not playing this coming Friday, but the next rendition of it will be happening in June at The Comedy Nest in Montreal.

It’s been almost one year since two members of the Russian band Pussy Riot were sent to labour camps, Irreverend James and the Critical Mass Choir pay tribute to releasing a gospel version of Pussy Riot’s Punk Prayer, we’re joined by Irreverend James’ The Profit, to talk about the release and the event surrounding it.

Gabrielle Papillon is back in Montreal, and we get the chance to catch up after the successful launch of her newest album “Little Bug”.

And last but not in the least bit LEAST. Dead Messenger is just about to release their newest album “Recharger”, and we get a preview performance live! Catch the album release party this coming Thursday at L’Escogriphe in Montreal, then they hit the road with the new album to Kingston, Toronto, Hamilton and Quebec City.

Edge of the City #57 • Innocence Lost

Innocence Lost, the third plays this season at the Centaur Theatre in Montreal, tells the story of Steven Truscott. We had the chance to sit down with Roy Surrette (Centaur Theatre’s Artistic Director and the Director of this play), and three of ten cast memebers; Pippa Leslie, Brendan McMurtry-Howlett and Michael Spencer-Davis.

Innocence Lost runs until February 24, 2013 in Montreal at the Centaur Theatre, before moving to Ottawa, where it will begin it’s run at the National Arts Centre from February 27 until March 16, 2013.

A long time supporter of Edge of the City, and easily one of favourite Montreal based jazz bands, The Frano Proietti Morph-tet, was our headliner for the September live podcast event. They played a brilliant set, featuring Jonathan Emile and Bad Weather (who will be opening our first live podcast event of 2013 on Saturday January 26th).

We also featured comedian Darren Henwood, a Confabulation story by Joe Conto, and opening the night, her very first time performing, the beautiful and wonderfully talented Victoria Laberge.

Just over a month ago, we brought you an awesome night of live music, comedy, Confabulation and the very last showcase co-hosted by the dearly departed Asaf Gerchak. (Playing the part of Al Lafrance, was Hadi Adel, aka Bad Weather).

We featured the ever awesome comedy of the late Chris Betts (ok, he’s alive and well in the UK, we’re just a touch bitter…), a beautiful musical Confabulation story from Emily Skahan, an awesome performance from Diana Daly, and the bizarre, and spectacular Bad Uncle!

Just about a year ago, Brie Neilson came on Edge of the City to help raise money for the recording and mastering of her debut album Picture Show. Here we are, just a few days away from the release of that album, and it’s beautiful! You can buy the album at Grumpy’s in Montreal, or online at bandcamp. Or you can catch one of many shows she’ll be performing across the country in the upcoming months. Coming up this week is the second edition of She’s Canadian, Eh? Canada’s only all women Comedy Festival. Eman, who is the producer and creator of the festival stopped by, and what resulted was a spot for our very own Kirsten Rasmussen! So much awesome comedy and so many awesome people. This years festival features, the amazing Deanne Smith (who you can also catch at Bloody Underrated’s Let’s Do This! on October 11th at MainLine Theatre), Steph Tolev and Christina Walkinshaw. EOTC Podcast #39 • Hello Kirsten Rasmussen!

We welcome our newest co-host to Edge of the City, a brilliant actor, improvisor, singer and writer. She is Kirsten Rasmussen! We are all very excited to have her a part of the show, in fact when our good friend Asaf Gerchak told us he was moving to Australia, we all wanted to have Kirsten become the newest co-host on our show of absolute ridiculousness. The photo is courtesy of none other than our good friend, Emily Skahan (Motel Raphael), who misses Asaf so much that she felt it necessary to transform Kirsten into Disco Gerchak.

Filmmaker Adam Reider (Rail City Media) is taking films on the road with the Rail City Roadshow! The pilot screening is this Wednesday at Theatre Ste. Catherine. There also three other screenings on Friday, two at John Abbot College, and another in Stanstead in the evening. It’s an awesome new concept coming to a city near you!

The Darling DeMaes have finished recording and mastering their new album. A release has yet to be announced, but they will be playing this Wednesday night at Pop Montreal! We got a rare chance to here an acoustic performance from Erik and Tasha. They’ll be performing at Le Cagibi, along side Ohara and Two Year Carnival. It’s only $10 at the door, and the show starts at 8:30pm sharp!

As we get closer and closer to election day here in Quebec, we bring in a panel to encourage you to go out and vote! Well, encourage Paul mostly. Filmmakers Aude Leroux – Levesque and Sebastien Rist, from Bideshi Films, produced a serieces of videos from Elections Quebec, to encourage the youth to go out in vote. Judes Dickey, is an avid Tweeterer, but also an politically active citizen, who came on board the panel to encourage you to come out and vote. While, I’m still on the fence, I’m sure that something good will come out of this right? Maybe spoiling my ballot? Looking at other options perhaps?

EOTC Podcast #25 • Map Project and Julie Perron

The MAP Project is a mixed media arts theatre piece, that began two years ago when the cast and crew of the show decided to film one day a week of their lives. It’s a blend of reality tv, fiction tv, theatre, mixed with reality. In the last two years they’ve taken the footage and written scripts based upon what they’ve recorded.

Back in the fall, they started presenting each episode mixing the original footage with live performances. Each month, they brought viewers a brand new episode and this week is your chance to catch up before the season finale! On Wednesday night you’ll be able to watch a marathon from 6pm – midnight, and then on Friday and Saturday you have FOUR chances to see the season finale. Each night at 9pm and 11pm. Tickets are $15 for each show, or you can catch everything with a MAP Pass for $25.

We also welcomed back, Keith Waterfield, former Gerchak, and the Segal Centre‘s Laugh Pack producer.

Julie Perron isn’t all that new to Montreal, but definitely has a taste for the music and musicians in the city. She brought her current band into the studio, who are all working on a variety of projects throughout Montreal.

Even though Asaf Gerchak was in the studio with us, and funny enough Matt Goldberg wasn’t. We decided to play Asaf’s most recent Confabulation story, from this month’s two year anniversary of Confabulation, where in which you were able to tell a story breaking the rules of Confabulation: no props, gimics, or tricks, and the story has to be your own, and has to be 100% true. Asaf’s story is a wikipedia story, and that’s all I’ll say about it because it’s amazing. (Confabulation is of course, Montreal’s premier all true story telling event).

EOTC Podcast #24 • Theatre, theatre and Tristan D. Lalla

A theatre filled Edge of the City, opening the show with Alain Mercieca, from Montreal’s Sketch Fest. It’s happening all week long at Theatre Ste. Catherine, and promises not to disappoint. After all some of Montreal’s favourites will be performing including Kirsten Rasmussen and it turns out our very own Asaf Gerchak will host a night this week!

We also welcomed back to the show, Micheala Di Cesare from the hit show 8 Ways My Mother Was Conceived. Her hit Fringe show from 2011 has evolved over the past year and before putting into rest (on stage), you have one last chance to catch it at the Rialto Theatre Studio space, this coming weekend.

Sticking with the theatre theme, we had actor and artist, Tristan D. Lalla stop by, finally, on the show. We’ve been trying to get organize a time for Tristan to come on the show for a while now (almost a year) and it finally happened, but it took him until the last two minutes of the show to talk about what he’s been up to! Just means we’ll have to get him back on soon.

Taylor Tower is a veteran of Confabulation (Montreal’s premiere all true storytelling event), and this time we have a story from all the way back in year one of Confabulation.

Music, music and more music! Every once and a while, we get a music filled show; and when we do, we usually end up having musicians that have collaborated with one another in some way shape or form. We welcomed back the beautiful voices of Brie Neilson and Corinna Rose; they also brought along the every talented Gabrielle Papillon. The trio have been touring together for the past month and have had some fun stories to tell. You’ll have to listen to find out all of them, but I’ll openly admit I’m jealous of Corinna’s ability to fall asleep anywhere, and there’s proof somewhere out there! Gabrielle has taken a many photos. You’ll be able to catch both Corinna Rose and Gabrielle Papillon, as we welcome them back on Edge of the City, for our next LIVE Podcast show, opening the Indyish Showcase at this years St-Ambroise Fringe Festival, on Friday June 15th at 3pm SHARP! The show is 100% free!

Continuing our music filled show, we had the pleasure of having the brilliant, Heirloom perform live in the studio. They’re a new mix of music on the Montreal scene, and have an awesome blend of musicians to create their unique classical sound. Heirloom just released their debut EP, The Lexicon of Accepted Ideas. A complex name for a beautifully complex sound.

Sticking with the theme of music, we featured a beautiful musically inclined Confabulation story from Risa Dickens. Confabulation is Montreal’s premiere all true storytelling event.

EOTC Podcast #22 • Christian Cagigal, Dan Jeanotte and Kaia Kater

A magician, an actor, and musical performance. BUT WAIT! That’s not all! For the first time in Edge of the City history, the show happened without Paul Aflalo (me)! It went off without a hitch, and I missed the magic. Literally, there was magic, with Christian Cagigal, from the brilliant and touching show, Now at and the Hour, produced by Danielle ACM from Beyond the Mountain Productions.

Also, joining in on the fun, Dan Jeanotte (Uncalled For) was on to talk about The Heretics of Bohemia, directed by Alison Darcy and written by Joseph Shragge. It’s playing straight through until May 19, 2012, at the Segal Centre Studio.

Kaïa Kater may only be 18 years old, but plays a mean banjo. I’m rather sad I missed her live performance. You should definitely keep an eye and ear open.

EOTC Podcast #21 • Ol’ Savannah and The City Streets

It was almost one year ago, that Edge of the City welcomed it’s first ever musical guest on the show. They were just about to release their self title album, and we welcomed them on with open arms. It didn’t take long for the way to begin, but we keep it friendly. Ol’ Savannah is the name of the band, and they came back to promote the launching of their second album. I was at the show on May 4th, and it’s was spectacular.

Also on the show plugging the release of their next two albums, Rick Reid, the lead singer from The City Streets. We got the rare chance to see and hear him perform a solo acoustic set.

EOTC Podcast #20 • Kai Nagata

We were rather fortunate this week, as we welcomed Kai Nagata on the show. Kai is a journalist, documentary filmmaker (check out Part 1 of Renaissance Man) and most recently an in-resident writer at The Tyee (an independent daily online magazine based in B.C.). He is in Montréal, for the first ever Journalism Strategies Conference that took place last weekend. It was a conference that brought together journalists, academic, activists, students, policy-makers, and other who might be interested in journalism to reach a series of goals, one of which was to “mobilize a broad network that will recommend public policies for ensuring spaces in the Canadian media ecology for journalism that places public deliberation and citizen participation at the core of its mission.”

Kai shared his experiences, ideas and joined us discussions about the student protest, politics in Quebec, the CBC and journalism in Canada and around the world. I’ll admit that this is one of my favourite shows we’ve had, and Kai you are more than welcome to join us again the next time you’re in town. Oh and before I end this post, you should check out the brilliant videos Kai is creating for the Toronto Star’s The Network, where in which Kai has been brought in as an unsolicited consultant to the CBC, his former employer.

EOTC Podcast #19 • Emily Skahan and the arts

Opening the show this week, we talk about the funding cuts to the CBC/Radio Canada and the National Film Board of Canada. We were all in agreement that the cuts, suck. Clearly the Conservatives don’t have a clue as to what’s important in this country, and are doing their best to screw it all up. Towards the middle of the discussion, Asaf Gerchak makes a very interesting argument about how anti-Canadian is to cut funding the both the CBC and the NFB. This discussion will continue for the next little while, and I’m hoping that it doesn’t fade away from the minds of Canadians, as a lot of current events tend to. (Robocalls anyone?)

Shifting gears though, and looking at the positive side of the arts in Canada, we had the pleasure of having Emily Skahan perform live in the studio. There are now three beautiful women, who have powerful and remarkable voices, that have performed on the show, and yes Emily is one of them. Add the voices of Clara Legault and Maya Malkin, and that makes the full band Motel Raphaël.

Named after the famous hotel that once existed on St. Jacques in NDG, (if you’re from Montreal, you know about Motel Raphaël, it was the dirtiest hotel on St. Jacques that became Knights Inn, before burning to the ground a year and bit ago), this all girl band is the exact opposite of what the hotel represents. You should definitely check them out, and I promise you they won’t disappoint!

After one of the best Confabulation events I’ve been too (Confabulation is Montreal’s premiere all-true storytelling event), we bring you a story by Joe Conto. I promise you this story doesn’t disappoint either!

EOTC Podcast #18 • A panel talk with Sasha Manoli and Gerard Harris

Shifting gears completely, we focused this show on two panel talks with comedy producer, Sasha Manoli (In Theory Productions) and Gerard Harris, writer and storyteller.

We talked about the ongoing student protests and boycott going on in Quebec, and repercussions of their actions. We also talked about the bilingualism in Quebec and the divide between the anglophone and francophone communities across the province.

Because Al Lafrance, couldn’t be here for the show, we played his story from Montreal’s premiere all-true storytelling event, Confabulation.

A note about this show, at one point during the show I, (Paul Aflalo), stated that language and culture are separate from one another. This was not what I intended to say, language and culture are deeply connected. In the context of the discussion, my question should have been framed, “Why is it in Quebec, the culture of the province can’t be preserved at the same time as promoting the benefits of bilingualism?”

EOTC Podcast #16 • The Burrows, Aural Turpitude and Chris Betts

Also on the show we had two of the three former Gerchaks, as Chris Betts and Keith Waterfield popped in for a visit. Keith also brought in the apologetic voice of Aural Turpitude (Leighland Beckman), and we were honoured to have him serenade us with a touching song.

EOTC Podcast #15 • Derek Harrison

A musician of many talents, Derek Harrison joined us in the studio to perform live, and talk about the many projects he’s working on. He recently released an EP, and is now playing with Krief (former Black Diamond Bay). He performed an awesome set in the studio, and I will add it was one of my favourite interviews we’ve had on the show.

You should also check out Derek’s website, it started off as a commitment to write a song every week for an entire year, starting in 2010. While he self admits, it wasn’t possible to do, he did finish writing 17 songs by the end. He has continued writing, and recording and will hit the goal of 52. You should definitely keep your eyes and ears wide open, and check out his website often.

Also on the show, we talked about the NDP, the CEGEP and University student protest and boycott underway in Quebec, and the first retraction ever done on the radio program (and podcast) This American Life. EOTC Live! Podcast with Brie Neilson and her Othermen + Moe Clark + Elgin-Skye

Back on February 17th, we recorded a live performance at Montreal Improv, featuring music the beautiful voice Elgin-Skye, the remarkable poetry of Moe Clark, a Confabulation story by Stephanie Robert, an awesome stand up set from Kirsten Rasmussen and ending off our night an awesome performance by Brie Neilson and her Othermen. Brie, has one of the most beautiful voices you’ll ever hear, and we couldn’t have been happy to have her perform with the full band! (You’ll remember we had on the radio show performing a solo acoustic set back in November.)

EOTC Podcast #14 • Marcel Jeannin, Ellen David & Diana Daly

With two plays opening within the same week, we had the pleasure to welcome on the show Marcel Jeannin from Morris Panych’s Vigil, now playing at the Segal Centre, and the director of Infinite Theatre‘s latest production, The Leisure Society playing at Le Bain St. Michel, Ellen David.

Al Lafrance heard her music at one of the awesome Hootenany shows at MainLine Theatre, and after hearing her music online it was easily decided that we wanted the wonderful Diana Daly to perform live on the show. It just so happens that she also just finished recording her brand new album coming out in May! She has a beautiful voice, that has the Canadian east coast flavour.

Even though February has come and gone, as he did last year, Matt Goldberg decided to make the theme for February’s Confabulation; The Shortest Story, in honour of the shortest month of the year. His goal was 29 short stories (seeing as it’s a leap year), and he made it happen, so for this weeks Confabulation segment, we bring four short stories by Jeff Gandell, Stephanie Robert, Andrew Zadel and Josh Budman.

EOTC Podcast #13 • The Wooden Sky and Dave Merheje

EOTC Podcast #12 • Friend of all the World & Sasha Manoli

Fresh of the release of their new album the Wild, we bring you Friend of the World, performing live on the show! They have a unique folk sound, that comes from a full experience of each of their band members. Centred around the south west part of Montreal, they play as many show as they can in a performance that includes the beautiful Harmonium. (I wouldn’t ordinarily write specifically about one instrument, but it’s necessary this week!)

Sasha Manoli is the founder of In Theory Productions, and produces some of the most unique comedy shows that you won’t find anywhere else. Fresh off the Crayon Party show that happened at Theatre Ste. Catherine, she brought back the winner of the Homegrown Comedy Competition at Just for Laughs 2011, Dave Merheje, for the second Dear Dave show. Now, how this show works is simple, there are ten videos with questions for Dave, he then answers each one on stage, essentially creating new material right before your very eyes. A show that shouldn’t be missed, and it’s coming to Toronto soon, so keep your eyes and ears peeled.

Now what made this show that much more special is we had the honour of removing someone from our Facebook Group. Our group has one simple rule, no more than 249 members so we can keep the group chat active. (The moment you hit 250 or more, it’s disables automatically.) Now if you want into our exclusive group, you have to tell us which member to kick out, and why. We might do it if you give us a good reason, but it’s unlikely. However, we do reserve the right to arbitrarily kick anyone out the group at any time. Like we did with Shayne Grym, who was rather obnoxious throughout the entire show. He will however have the change to redeem himself on Monday, April 2nd, 2012, when he comes on the show to plug the next Acme Burlesque show.

EOTC Podcast #11 • Live from MainLine Theatre!

At our home away from home, MainLine Theatre, we brought you, from Bouge d’ici’s Bare Bones Dance, Amy Blackmore. We also had the pleasure of having Lynsey Billing on the show, talking about her brand new show, Scary Tales & Broken Hearts.

Scary Tales & Broken Hearts is a show that has been a work in progress for a couple of years now, and has finally reached it’s debut! Sneak peaks have been shown throughout the last year at the Montreal Fringe Festival and at the Bouge d’ici Cabaret back in January. Anyone who got a snippet, definitely wanted to see more. And it was spectacular!

Also joining us was the trio of Considering Anyone Present, a brand new band, that just launched their new album Toss Him & Pray. They’re brand spanking new to the Montreal scene, had their debut album was entirely produced themselves. It’s nice to see more and more bands working independently and producing their own works.

Also, on the show we had the unique opportunity to get a glimpse into the world of Uncalled For, as Matt and Asaf performed an impromptu scene for your listening ears.

And for this weeks Confabulation segment, we bring you story from last August’s Kid Stuff, a story by teacher, Meaghan Deere.

EOTC Podcast #10 • One year of Edge of the City and the Jimmyriggers

There’s nothing more fun than having the flu, while celebrating one year of Edge of the City. That’s exactly what happened to Paul just the day before this show. Lesson learned, when you have the flu, stay home. Joining us on this one year anniversary were the Jimmyriggers, a local Montreal favourite who have been around the block at least twice, but all in a good way!

The Jimmyriggers are definitely a band, each and every single one of you should be paying attention to, close attention.

They played an awesome show with Sarah Jane Scouten opening for them at O’ Patro Vys. By far one of my favourite venues in the city, you’ll often find shows going late into the night, unlike a lot of venues in the city who want all live music over by 12am. (Something tells me I’ve said that in a post before, but you know it’s good to repeat it!)

Taken direct from their site: the Jimmyriggers are built around the songwriting talents of bass player David Pearce and guitarist Andre Kirchhoff, anchored by the solid back-beat of drummer Lewis Handford, and the colour of maverick guitar slinger Kevin Moquin.

They were a lot of fun to have on the show, to say the least. You can catch more of Kevin, when we release the Live Podcast @ Montreal Show soon!

EOTC Podcast #9 • Sarah Jane Scouten

Without a doubt our favourite guest to date, Sarah Jane Scouten is someone you want to be listening to, because she has a beautiful voice, and wonderful talent for writing. She performs with a full string band, but we were fortunate to have her perform an acoustic set live in the studio!

We had a lot of fun surprises throughout the show, including Sarah’s sister, Anna, who popped into the studio and performed the closing song along with Sarah.

We should mention that she launched her debut album Magpie Waltz tonight, over at Casa, and we know the show was a great success, because Paul ended up going, and as promised there was square dancing that happened just after her set. He openly admits to chickening out, but was very happy to be there!

Sarah, when you read this, we all want to reiterate that you are more than welcome to back on the show, bring your guitar, banjo or just yourself and come hang out!

EOTC Podcast #8 • Acme Burlesque and a Moon Base

There’s something really awesome about having a strip tease on air. Sadly, the only time that’s happened is when Athena Holmes and Galen Hartley came for a visit to the studio. We were promised a strip tease but it didn’t happen, instead we had the musical talent of Mr. Shayne Gryn. Shayne is one of two brains behind the new Acme Burlesque show that premiered last Thursday (February 2, 2012) at MainLine Theatre.

Also on the show was the multi-talented, Kirsten Rasmussen, who premiered her brand spanking new one-woman show, Tough at Theatre Sainte-Catherine. Kirsten, fresh off her successful run of Blink, Blink, Blink at the Centaur Theatre Wildside Festival, had a chance to talk about her new show which is heading on it’s way to the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the second LARGEST Fringe Festival.

For this week’s Confabulation segment, we bring you a story from Andrew Zadel that was originally told at last December’s Family Stories.

EOTC Podcast #6 • Trevor Davies and Al Lafrance getting cosy

Besides the brilliant Matt Goldberg, Al Lafrance (from Bloody Underrated) has come by for a second visit, and something tells me he’s itching to stay on for longer. He did hook us up with Trevor Davies, a new comer to Montreal, and our music scene.

This being our last show of 2011, and ending off an awesome year at Edge of the City, it only felt right to have a brilliant musician come into the studio and perform live. Trevor is originally from BC (as are most awesome Montreal musicians), but I will mention was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He has spend most of his life on Vancouver Island, where he learned how to play music, mostly self-taught. Trevor released his debut album, Vanity Press, back in January.

Al has be working hard over at Bloody Underrated, and has also taken over the job of Operations Manager with our friends at MainLine Theatre. He has a set of new podcasts coming out, including another one with our very own Paul Aflalo (seems odd rerferring to myself in the third person… yes I do in fact write these posts) it’s all about swearing and wonders of it. That will be coming out on Christmas Day! He also has a podcast with Elgin Skye, coming out in the new year! So definitely stay tuned, because you’ll be hearing more about Al Lafrance in 2012!

EOTC Podcast #5 • Choeur Maha, Irreverend James & Asaf Gerchak

Fresh off a two month hiatus, and traveling around Europe and the Middle East, Asaf Gerchak is home! Right where he belongs co-hosting Edge of the City! We couldn’t be happier to have him back, but we’ll admit we will miss the other Gerchak’s. Keith, Chris and Bianca, the show will not be the same without each of you! You’re all fired. (But welcome anytime you want to come back for a visit!)

To welcome back Asaf in true style, we also invited Choeur Maha and Irreverend James to join us to plug a show they had at the Ukranian Federation. Now, to put this into perspective, Choeur Maha is a choir of 30 plus, women, and Irreverend James with his full band is five people. While I would love to say we had 35 people in the studio performing, I’d be lying, but we did have a total of 15! Which is pretty damn awesome!

Now, this entire show wouldn’t have been possible without the awesomeness of Sir Dave Cool (yes, that is in fact his real name). Dave has been managing Irreverend James for quite some time now, and when we heard about the combined show, Sacred and Profane, it was Dave who got everyone wrangled together to perform live on Edge of the City.

EOTC Podcast #4 • Jenn Mierau & Bis Films

I met Jenn Mierau at a Yelp event that my awesome friend and compadre, Risa Dickens, was throwing together. She gave me a copy of her CD and only after listening to it from beginning to end, that she did EVERYTHING for the album, it is 100% self produced, but listening to her music you wouldn’t be able to tell. It was great to have her on the show, and she is someone you will want to keep your eyes out for.

Also, on the show we had Emmanuel Hessler and Katherine Macnaughton from Bis Films. They just released a long awaited dance film that was co-directed and choreographed by Amy Blackmore (Artistic Director of Bouge d’ici and Director of the Montreal Fringe Festival); So There’s This Girl. Produced entirely by themselves, with the financial support coming from a fundraiser, and their pockets, this film took about two years to complete. It was screened at MainLine Theatre, and will be showcased at the Film Night at the Bouge d’ici Dance Week.

This week’s Confabulation story comes from last year’s Neighbourhoods, a story by Asaf Gerchak.

EOTC Podcast #3 • Annie Becker & Matt Stern

As the summer came to an end, and the fall was quickly approaching, our good friend Dave Cool, sent us an email saying we really ought to have Annie Becker on the show, and it was awesome fun ever since! We were looking for a good reason to have her back, and when she got in touch about her new music video, it was decided that then would be a great time. Lo and behold, she also brought along her good-friend, Matt Stern who is also gearing up for his album launch on the same night Annie’s video is being released, not only that, at the exact same show!

The one nice surprise came when the dearly departed Asaf Gerchak called in from the “other side”; which really means half-way across the world from Israel. He will be back soon though, and the rest of the Gerchaks gone! (In the nice kind of way, where they could come back and visit every once and a while…)

EOTC Podcast #2 • Brie Neilson & Bloody Underrated

Even before recording my first podcast with Bloody Underrated, I knew that I wanted to have Al Lafrance on the show. We met back in the summer while we were both slaving (a very happily doing so) for the Montreal FRINGE! Festival, and I would have to say Al strikes as a rather odd fellow at first, but once you get to know him, you quickly realize that he has a wealth of knowledge, and a character that makes you realize just how oddly determined he is. He knows more about local music than any person I have met, and will easily want to make any of it (unless he fucking hates your music) part of his podcast. He will be back on the December 21st show, our last show for 2011.

Brie Neilson is someone who I originally met a few years ago during an Unsettlers show at La Sala Rossa I would say back in 2008. I got to know her more through my friends at Indyish over the years, and I’ve had her perform at a variety of different shows as part of a Billy Holiday tribute band featuring Franco Proietti (thanks to Risa Dickens I might add), with The Unsettlers and then again with her flourishing Brie Neilson and Her Other Men.

Brie Neilson and Her Other Men, are in the midst of putting together an album, and are looking for your help! They have a full blown campaign going over at IndieGoGo, and so far they’ve raised just under $2000. They have a goal of $10,000 and they are hoping to meet their goal by Brie’s Birthday on December 19th.

The are a lot of performers in the Montreal, and Brie is an exception to them all, she has one of the most beautiful voices I’ve heard in the city, and I was extremely happy to have her on the show. She will be back (if you listen to the podcast, there was a promise to have her and Franco Proietti come back and have a jam session live on air), and we’ll keep you updated on her campaign. Please do donate, even $10 can help her reach her goal! Pass the word along, and let everyone know!

EOTC Podcast #1 • Corinna Rose

Inaugurating our brand spanking new website, and our new weekly podcast, Corinna Rose with her full band was in the studio. She came on Edge of the City for the first time back in early October. She is a beautiful person, with one hell of a voice; and when you add a full band to it, it makes it’s the icing on the cake.

She performed a show later that night at one my favourite venues in Montréal, Casa Del Popolo. She opened up for an awesome Montréal band, The Darling Demaes who are going to releasing a brand spanking new album, that was recorded by Mark Lawson.

After this show, Corinna has one more solo show in December at the Yellow Door, and then the band with get together and start working on their new album! Which if it’s anything like their first album, it will be AWESOME!
